Over the years, I’ve shared stories here about the sculptures I’ve created – from dragons emerging from fallen trees to wildlife brought to life in timber. But this year, I wanted to do something a little different: bring that experience together in a way that people can learn from directly.
In July 2026, I released my first book, ‘Chainsaw Art: From Design to Finished Sculpture’, and I’m excited to finally put into words the techniques, tips, and insights I’ve gathered over decades of carving. The book is both a practical manual and a creative guide, taking readers from safety and control to the techniques I use for flowing forms, textures, deep cuts, and dramatic shapes.
Why I Decided to Write This Book
I’ve met so many people who are fascinated by chainsaw carving but aren’t sure where to start. The chainsaw is a powerful tool – dynamic, surprising, and yes, a little intimidating – but it’s also capable of incredible precision and creativity.
I wanted to create a guide that demystifies the process, showing how, with patience, practice, and respect for the wood, anyone can learn to bring their ideas to life. This book grew out of that desire – to open the door for people who want to explore the craft more deeply.
“Every tree has a story in it somewhere,” I’ve always said. “When I start carving, I’m not just cutting shapes – I’m trying to reveal something that already feels like it belongs in that piece of timber.”
From Safety to Sculpture
Chainsaw carving is thrilling, but it demands respect. That’s why the book starts with safety and control – the foundations for any good sculptor. From there, I guide readers through the techniques I use every day:
· Shaping flowing, organic forms from solid timber
· Creating bold textures and expressive surfaces
· Making deep structural cuts
· Developing dramatic silhouettes and movement in wood.
I have included clear step-by-step sequences, tips from my own experience, and inspiring finished pieces to show how it all comes together. Whether you’re just starting out or already carving, there’s something in there to help you see the possibilities in every block of timber.
What Carving Has Taught Me
For me, chainsaw carving has always been a blend of art and craft. My background in illustration and classical sculpture taught me about form, movement, and proportion, while my work as a tree surgeon gave me a practical understanding of timber and tools.
Bringing these two worlds together shaped the way I work – balancing bold forms with detailed textures, and I am always looking for the character within the wood. That perspective runs through the book: carving is as much about seeing potential as it is about technique.
My Thoughts on the Book
Writing this book has been a labour of love. It’s not just a record of what I do – it’s a way to share the excitement of carving and hopefully inspire others to try it themselves.
I hope readers come away with practical skills, yes, but also a sense of wonder and curiosity about the material. There’s something magical about taking a block of wood and, with each cut, revealing a piece of art that’s been hiding inside all along.
Looking Ahead
I’m thrilled to be sharing this new chapter. Of course, commissions and sculptures will always be at the heart of my work, but this book gives me the chance to pass on what I’ve learned and to show that anyone can explore the creative possibilities of chainsaw carving.
If you’ve ever wanted to try this craft, or simply understand how a chainsaw can become a sculptor’s ultimate tool, this book is for you. And just like every sculpture I make, it all begins with a simple idea: inside every piece of timber, there’s something beautiful just waiting to be revealed.
